What should you do to train yourself to read exam texts more confidently and capably? Here we have given five strategies which you can adopt to prepare the reading test better.

i) Study IELTS coursebook materials

Read about different topics from standard IELTS coursebooks e.g. Focus on IELTS (Sue O’Connell); Ready For IELTS (Sam McCarter) to familiarise yourself with the global range of textual subject matter covered by IELTS reading passages.

ii) Practice reading tests outside class and under time pressure

Attempt to complete IELTS reading practice tests according to the time limit (60 minutes in total, 20 minutes per passage) and check the answers afterwards - not during the test!

iii) Write down definitions and synonyms of new vocabulary

Research, record and review unfamiliar words and phrases from previous IELTS reading passages in an academic vocabulary notebook.

iv) Read newspapers, magazines, journals and non-fiction regularly

Make time to read factual analytical material from various text sources available both online and on paper. Read newspapers/news sites like The Guardian, The I and The Telegraph (all freely accessible via their websites). Read magazines like The Economist, New Scientist and National Geographic (individual articles can be accessed for free online). There are also medical journals published monthly: The Lancet & Nursing Times.

v) Join a local library to read and borrow relevant literature

Find your nearest library and become a member. You will be able to find copies of useful magazine samples which you can read there as well as helpful non-fiction books. Focus on genres such as environmental science e.g. ecology, zoology & geology, modern technology: engineering & ICT and professional vocations: education, medicine and psychology.
